On 3 September 1945, the day after the Japanese signed the surrender papers on the USS Missouri, the 449th escorted a Ki-21 Sally to Mengzi, China for a surrender ceremony involving Japanese officials in Hanoi. Richard Maddox, an armorer, recorded the day’s events on a P-38 gun camera and narrates this film I have posted on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOuOHq3mwmQ

There are more details and more photos in the book!

The Japanese plane is a Ki-21-Ia or -Ib or -IIa “Sally”. You can by the long dorsal greenhouse. The Ki-21-IIb had a dorasal turret with a single 12.7mm machine gun in place of the long greenhouse. The -Ib, -IIa, and -IIb also had a remote control gun in the tail, but every time the video showed the tail of the plane someone was standing in the way. If the gun was not there it was -Ia, if it was there then it’s a -Ib or -IIa.

Here are some additional photos of the bomber. They do not appear to show any sort of weaponry in the tail, but seeing as how it was used to transport the surrender delegation I would assume all armament had been removed.
