On 11 November 1944, 9 P-51s from the 25th Fighter Squadron and 7 P-38s from the 449th were on a fighter sweep over Thailand when they were jumped by five Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) Nates. They caught the Mustangs low and shot down Lieutenant Henry Minco. The P-38s had a great deal of difficulty because the Nates were much slower and much more maneuverable than the Lightnings. In the end, however, all five Thai Fighters were shot down, effectively ending opposition to American raids over north Thailand for the rest of the war. These two paintings of the event are courtesy of the RTAF Museum. Notice how the P-51 is painted as an AVG P-40 rather than the diamond-checker tail of the 25th.
